Visiting Our Manufacturer

We're visiting our manufacturer this October. Tooling and molds are the single biggest investment in our company, and we want to shake the hands of the people building it and walk their factory floor ourselves. As much as we'd have loved to produce this in the U.S., the precision this spin-clean mechanism needs - tight tolerances across 20+ custom molds - is a capability only a handful of factories in the world have fully dialed in, and the best ones are in China.

Where We Are Now

As of October, we're in the Tooling & Manufacturing stage - the longest single part of our production timeline. See the full breakdown on our production timeline page →

What Is Tooling?

Picture two large steel blocks compressed under high pressure, then injected with melted plastic - that's how most of Moonbox's parts are made. Moonbox has 20+ unique parts, which means 20+ custom molds, each one engineered, tested, and refined before full production starts.

A Hidden Scraper for Occasional Touch-Ups

We're adding a small scraper that stores discreetly inside the landing pad. It's there for the occasional stubborn clump that needs a little extra help, with a dedicated storage spot that keeps it close at hand.

Helping Keep Litter Contained

We've added a bridge across the base to help guide stray litter into the waste drawer instead of through the gap toward the floor. The bridge also provides additional support across the frame.

Anti-Slip Feet, Inspired by Backer Feedback

You asked for a way to help keep Moonbox from sliding during use, and we're incorporating anti-slip feet into the base. That same week, we spotted a removable foot pad on a stool at a local grocery store and thought, "that's the kind of detail we need."

An Easier Fit for Everyday Grocery Bags

We've added a bottom groove and two top notches to help hold many standard plastic grocery bags neatly inside the waste drawer, giving you a convenient way to reuse bags you already have at home. Watch our October 3 demonstration on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, or TikTok: @moonlitterbox.

Our next milestone is the manufacturer visit, where we'll review these design refinements and the path into tooling together.

Thank you to everyone who backed us on Kickstarter or placed a preorder. Your support is helping us bring Moonbox to life, and your feedback is shaping the details along the way. We'll stay closely involved and keep sharing monthly progress updates.

Next stop: China. We'll take you along.

One-Piece Moon Face

The Moon Face will become one large piece with hidden snap fits, giving it a cleaner look, fewer visible seams, and making it easier to wash. The prototype shown earlier used three separate sections.

Waste Drawer Liners

We intentionally designed the drawer to work with most plastic grocery bags and commercially available small liners. We've also received a lot of requests for a perfectly fitted liner, so we plan to offer our own landfill-friendly option later on.

Hidden Backup Scraper

We're adding a small scraper hidden inside the landing pad for the occasional stubborn clump that needs a little extra help.

Fully Enclosed Bottom Chamber

We're fully enclosing the chamber around the waste drawer to help contain stray litter and prevent it from spilling onto the floor.

Rubber Feet

This came directly from community feedback. We're adding rubberized feet to help keep Moonbox from sliding during use.

5 Ideas We're Testing

These are concepts we're exploring, not confirmed features.

Idea A - Mirrored Base

Some backers asked if Moonbox could be used in the opposite direction. The challenge is adding the mirrored cutouts without compromising the structural strength of the base. If this gets implemented, there would be caps to cover the holes that are not in use.

Idea B - Detachable Ramp

We're exploring a detachable ramp for senior cats, cats with limited mobility, or cats that simply prefer an easier step up.

Idea C - An Easier Way to Empty the Litter

We're testing an empty plate and anchor points on the base that could give you another way to easily empty all the litter out of Moonbox.

Idea D - Refillable Odor Pods

We're still testing this one. Since Moonbox is only semi-enclosed, an odor pod may help reduce odor, but it isn't meant to eliminate odor completely. We don't want to add something just for the sake of adding another feature, so if we can't make it genuinely useful, we'd rather leave it out.

Idea E - Detachable Cover

We're also exploring a removable cover for people who prefer a more enclosed litter box. This would most likely be offered as a separate accessory.

The core Moonbox is already there. Now we're obsessing over the little details that can make a big difference before the molds are locked in, while future-proofing the design for thoughtful accessories and improvements down the road.

A lot of these ideas came directly from you guys. Keep the feedback coming.

Moonbox reached its $250,000 funding goal in just 10 hours and raised over $300,000 in our first 24 hours!

Taking this campaign further gives us more flexibility for engineering, testing, and production, while helping us bring future Moonbox ideas to life sooner.

Thank you to every backer who made this possible. We're just getting started!
